Why get on the list then?  Because we are planning on only doing 10 client sessions which means we will be limited and the best way to know you will get in (or have a high chance) is to be on the list.

If you are planning on doing one of Couture type sessions (seniors, teens, college and ladies) – we will be having lots of fun with gown designs and such.  Watch for more on that soon!

#1- Nikon D4

Face it–I love my Nikons and this little bad boy did not disappoint. Sure we have a full line of Canons for the interns, but I’m a grown up woman and like my Nikons.  Why?  Well one of the reasons is that I can use my fisheye lens that is awesome and about 18 years old.  I don’t have to buy a new line of lenses worth $15,000+ every time there is a new update to the camera!  Sure, I’ll update lenses, but I don’t have to each time.  I also learned on a Hasselblad, and to me the Nikon layout makes more sense.  The Canons remind me of a Mamiya, and I never liked those. I think which camp you fall in has a lot to do with what you learned on.  So there is no right or wrong (go Nikon), but for me the Nikon D4 rocks.

#2- The Bakersfield Distance Project Running Camp Annual Pass

As most of you know I’ve gotten into running.  Yes, I use that term pretty liberally… in fact I don’t think my Garmin says I’ve “run” yet, but I’m getting faster.  This group is the bomb.  You wont find a better value either. $300 for an entire year or only $100 per quarter.  What does that get me you ask?  T TH- run camp 6:00-7:00, MW- walk camp 6-7 (all at Yokuts Park).  Fridays there is usually some hike going on if you missed a day and choose not to be a rest day.  Sat & Sunday there are always things like Killa Hilla, the Dump Run, etc that I can join.  This means I could really join in virtually every day if I so choose.  (Yes, we even did Killa Hilla on Christmas Eve, and New Years day is the Annual Killa Hilla Classic!)  That breaks down to 82 cents a day to participate.  The people themselves- awesome!  Coach Andy is very encouraging.  I’m the “slow antelope” and yet, he still gives me the same motivation to meet both my goals and those of our Boston Marathon runners.  The runners in the group are some of the best people I know.  I’ve never gotten anything but motivation and fun from them.  Steve and Ray are fast… so sometimes I simply try to limit the number of times they lap me!  You guys know me- I’m not built like a runner, so if I can do this- anyone can do this!

#3- West Coast Swing Class with Josh Harless at Studio 9

For our anniversary last year Mike got us dance class lessons.  Looking at our schedule we ended up in Josh’s class because of the day and time!  We were looking for an activity that didn’t involve just sitting and eating.  It seemed our entire social life had come to revolve around food!  I thought I would like dancing- had no idea how much Mike would like it!  Now, I dance about as good as I run so we took the beginner series twice and acted like we were new the second round introducing ourselves and everything.  Luckily everyone in the class has a great sense of humor.  We did gradually improve.  In fact over the New Year’s holiday we competed in our first competition. I placed 6th and Mike placed 7th in our division.  (yes, more than 7 people!).  What do I love about the class?  It is very affordable.  $10 per person.  You just pay each week no monthly fee.  Each month it starts over- so 6 count, then the next month 8 count, then back to 6 count, then 8 count… you see where I’m going here.  That makes it really easy to jump in.  Josh is a great teacher and the classes are still small enough that you feel like you are getting some one on one attention.  yet, the classes are big enough that you don’t feel freaked out like a spot light is beaming down on your mistake when you make it.  You don’t have to be a couple.  There are plenty of people that come without a partner.  We rotate people.  That sounded strange to me at first, but now I get it.  If Mike and I always danced together we would have some pretty bad habits and dance floor squabbles!  Rotating allows you to learn much faster and it turned out to be part of the fun!  I’ve met some really great people in this class.  Now, I hear that not all dance classes are as fun as ours, but that would be unfortunate because I can’t imagine a funner group of people to dance with!  On Fridays there is social west coast swing dancing at Trouts 6-8:30 with no cover charge.  If you aren’t sure what west coast swing is- come on out!  Check it out.  Worst case scenario you sit and have a drink with me.  (there are two sections of Trouts- so if you don’t see dancers in the front- head towards the bathrooms and just go to the back and you will see the other section.  On a side note- don’t park on the street- only in the parking lot).  If you are thinking, “I’m in!”  let me know I’ll get you your first lesson free!  Trust me- you will be back!

#4- Terrio Challenge

This time this is for Mike!  I did the Terrio challenge before and loved it.  This last time I was plagued with some health problems that threw me off the challenge.  No fault of Terrio, but I kinda dropped out.  However, Mike became a convert! In the process he has lost 35 pounds and became a regular gym goer!  The trainers are AWESOME!  They each have their own personalities and ways of motivating so you have to find the one that you click with.  Don’t be fooled into thinking those girls will go easier on you either- they can be brutal (in a good way).  Personally I still think Bryson is the bomb and he will occasionally dance for you which takes your mind off the pain for a moment!  How is the Terrio challenge different than just signing up for the gym?  #1-Dietician that works with you.  #2- actual certified athletic trainers – why is this important?  Because it is easy to get injured if you don’t know how to do this stuff right.  They can correct little things that can lead to big problems.  This keeps you from getting injured and dropping out.  For people like me that have been rebuilt the PT/ ATC / Trainers are on top of it.  Sure once you know how to do things right you could do them at your own gym, but the learning process is critical I’ve found.   #3- locations- multiple location and time to work with the trainers for the challenge!  Recommendations- get the Live Strong calorie app to track your calories (makes life easy).  Sign up with a friend- they help keep you accountable!  1/2  way through, set a goal.  The first time I did the challenge I set a goal to run a half marathon.. which led to the Bakersfield Distance Project and yet new goals!

#5-  Hoka Stinson Evos

I love these shoes!  I tried the minimalist thing- with a broken toe and Northern California’s terrain I realized that I DON’T want to feel the earth.  I like seeing it, not feeling it.  My 2 inches of foam and I are happy now.  They seem to agree with not only the additional weight I have on my frame compared to the usual runner, but also all the surgeries aren’t as bothered in these shoes.  The laces don’t rub on any of my scars either.  It takes a little getting used to at first, but after a week or two they are just normal.  Like walking on marshmellowy pillows is the way we were intended to walk.  Sorry minimalist!  My only complaint… the treads don’t last forever!  I bought my second pair about a month ago and I can see I’m already wearing the tread down.  Granted I’ve been on roads instead of trails lately so that might be the culprit.  I might try the Tarmacs for the road by Hokas too. Now if I could just get Hoka to sponsor an overweight, handicapped, awkward middle aged woman running I’d be golden!    Best place to buy your shoes?  In Bakersfield- Sole 2 Soul.  Ask for Garrett.  They are the only place that can properly fit you for running shoes.  You hop on the treadmill- they check your gait – I happen to be perfectly nuertral (Kudos to Dr. Valos and those surgeries!).  Some people roll in, some roll out… I’m not sure if they have a pressure pad, but that can also show where you apply pressure when you are standing.  These help them to know what kind of shoe is best.  I learned- you can’t buy shoes because of the color (sorry my orange saucony’s that I never wore.. sniff sniff).  Roadrunner Sports is good for fitting down south as well.

There are my top 5 purchases for 2012… I’m sure I could make this list a lot longer.. and who knows I might as I think of them!

I did notice that only 1 is a photo purchase… the other 4 involved movement, activity and being social… maybe this will set the trend for 2013 and beyond as well!  I know 2013 will be focused on Health and Family  so who knows what I’ll add to the mix for the 2013 top 5!

We know people love Madison’s pet photos and she has agreed to do a Pet Day for Charity!  We are excited!  She so loves those furry little critters!  So with $1,000 left to raise for her first Marathon (Rock n Roll in AZ) she is offering up a great deal!  Not only do you get a mini session on a good day- you get the files or 8×10′s.   You choose!  We will work together if we are adding humans to the mix!  So if you are a student like Madison headed to college in the Fall and have your favorite friend you are leaving behind this is the perfect time to create a portrait of the two of you to take with you.  (As we have explained to Madi, taking the dog is NOT an option!!)  This is also a great time to show off that special pet that has touched your lives and is getting a little up there in years, or the new puppy that you just added to the family!  Let’s be creative and raise money for a cure for MS!

#1- What if I only want 5 of the 6 workshops- can I sell the 6th one.

Yes. You are welcome to share the love with your friends.  If they are friends maybe try not to turn a profit off them, but feel no guilt about keeping the perks for yourself!

#2- I’m only 16 can I attend?

Yes- photography is great for all ages!

#3- I don’t have an expensive camera- can I still attend?

Yes- you don’t have to have a crazy expensive camera- Steph turns out some cool stuff even on an iphone when running- so can you!

#4- I am a professional photographer already can I come?

Yes-we understand there are a lot of people that would like to learn exactly how Stephanie does things and you are welcome to join in. We do ask that you don’t market yourself during the class to fellow attendees because that is just awkward for everyone present.

#5- Tell me about the Facebook Group?

This is a great place for open discussion and critique with helpful followup for participants. Our clients are really going to love this perk!  It will be a closed group.

#6- Do VIPers get special treatment?

Yes, they do!  It is the best way to experience the workshops and we do have lots of great perks and benefits for them.  Those that want to learn it all- this is the way to do it. Trust us… we don’t want to give away all the surprises too soon though!
